Farnborough International Airshow 2026: The Companies Defining the Next Decade

Farnborough International Airshow 2026 confirmed that the aerospace industry is moving beyond simply building larger aircraft. The strongest momentum is now centred on autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, space technologies, advanced communications, sustainable propulsion and integrated defence capabilities. Around half of the show’s record 1,600 exhibitors had a defence focus, reflecting the rapid shift towards dual-use technologies and AI-enabled systems.

Among the most exciting exhibitors was AALTO, showcasing its Zephyr high-altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS). Operating in the stratosphere for weeks or months, Zephyr bridges the gap between satellites and conventional aircraft, offering communications, surveillance and Earth observation capabilities that are attracting both commercial and government customers. The Advanced Air Mobility sector also demonstrated continued progress. Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, Vertical Aerospace and Quantum Systems all highlighted the transition from prototype development towards commercial deployment, while hybrid-electric concepts gained increasing attention as a practical solution for extending range beyond purely battery-electric aircraft. 

Artificial intelligence featured throughout the exhibition. Many large and small companies demonstrated autonomous mission systems, AI-assisted decision making, autonomous drones and next-generation air defence technologies, signalling that software is becoming as strategically important as hardware. Space also occupied a much larger role than in previous years. 

The dedicated Space Zone showcased satellite communications, Earth observation, cyber security and space infrastructure, reflecting the growing convergence between aerospace, telecommunications and defence. The visitor list reinforced Farnborough’s importance as a global strategic meeting place. Senior airline executives, defence ministers, military delegations, investors, government agencies and aerospace CEOs attended alongside one of the largest-ever US political delegations, including multiple senators and state governors seeking aerospace investment. 

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Farnborough 2026 is that future competitive advantage will increasingly belong to organisations capable of integrating AI, autonomy, advanced communications, space assets and defence technologies into complete ecosystems rather than standalone products. The era of isolated innovations is rapidly giving way to highly connected, software-defined aerospace platforms.
