EU PPPA-2-26 Call to Drive Game-Changing Space Launch Innovation
The European Union’s PPPA-2-26 funding call is a new initiative aimed at accelerating breakthrough technologies for next-generation European space launch systems. The call forms part of the EU’s Preparatory Action on space launchers and reflects a growing strategic priority: ensuring Europe maintains independent, competitive access to space.
With a total budget of €20 million, the programme will support a small number of high-impact research and development projects focused on disruptive propulsion technologies. Unlike incremental improvements to existing rockets, PPPA-2-26 specifically targets “game-changing” innovations capable of transforming launcher performance, sustainability, and cost efficiency.
Eligible projects must address advanced propulsion concepts or related subsystems, including staged combustion engines, hybrid propulsion systems, aerospike engines, and autophage propulsion technologies. These areas are considered promising pathways toward more efficient and adaptable launch vehicles. The call focuses on technologies at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 3–6, meaning concepts should already be validated at laboratory or prototype level but still require significant development before commercial deployment.
The EU expects to fund approximately three projects, each receiving grants of around €5–7 million over a typical duration of two to three years. The long-term goal is to mature these innovations so they can contribute to operational European launch capabilities by around 2035.
Beyond technological advancement, the initiative also supports broader European policy objectives. Strengthening domestic launcher capabilities reduces reliance on external providers, enhances resilience in space infrastructure, and reinforces Europe’s role in the rapidly expanding global space economy.
Participation is open to organisations established in eligible EU Member States and associated countries, with both single applicants and collaborative consortia encouraged to apply.
By investing in high-risk, high-reward concepts, PPPA-2-26 aims to position Europe at the forefront of future launch technologies and lay the groundwork for more sustainable and competitive access to space in the decades ahead.
